What are tryouts?
Every soccer club that plays in a competitive league hosts tryouts at the beginning of every season. Tryouts are a process ran by North Whidbey Soccer Club to ensure that every player wanting and interested in playing select soccer are identified and coaches and directors can provide appropriate placement of players onto teams that will help accelerate and benefit their development.
Our mission at North Whidbey Soccer Club is to provide high level support to players that will facilitate the technical, tactical and mental developmenf of all players. By placing players onto teams during tryouts, this ensures players are in an environment suitable to support their growth. Washington Youth Soccer mandates the tryout dates and schedule.
To participate in NWSC tryouts players need to register online. Players need to register by April 29th, but we will accept walk-ons if you miss this deadline. Each age group hosts 2 tryouts and we encourage you to make both!
Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the tryout starts, and you will need to bring confirmation and check in on the upper fields at Ft. Nugent. Also bring water and appropriate clothing, shin guards are mandatory. NWSC players are to wear non branded playing clothes and should not wear a uniform from a previous season. Here you will be given a jersey with a number. This jersey number is how coaches identify you throughout the process, and you will wear the same jersey on both days.
Each age group's head coaches will introduce themselves to the group and club trainers will then deliver tryouts while the head coaches evaluate.
Following tryouts, the coaches will meet and place players onto teams, the number of teams depend on the number of players available to each age group. Players will get a phone call or email offering a spot on a team, and jersey numbers will be posted on our results page. Players will have 24 hours to accept a spot or be offered a number of different programs our club has to offer.
What Does A Select Season Look Like?
A typical select season with North Whidbey Soccer Club starts about June 1st. Our club offers training 2-3 times a week depending on the coach. Tournaments are played during the summer prior to the season starting. Individual teams determine how many & in which tournaments to compete (typically 3-5 tournaments which are covered by the select fee). Our teams play their select season in the North Puget Sound League (NPSL) and those games begin in September & continue through half of December. Most teams also participate in the NPSL Development League in February and March, so they are playing a good portion of the year. Traveling throughout the Puget Sound area is required, as half the games are played at home on the Ft. Nugent fields, while the remaining games are played away.
What is the Financial Commitment for Select?
Team sizes are based on the number of players that try out & commit to the season. Select Soccer has an average cost of $850-$950 per player per season, with scholarship opportunities available to cut down the costs. Scholarships are available for those families that qualify.
