NOW I'M A REFEREE- WHAT IS NEXT?
How do I get assigned games?
Once the Referee Liaison receives your contact information (email/phone number), you will be placed on the North Whidbey Soccer Club (NWSC) Referee Roster. A game schedule will be emailed to all NWSC referees asking for availability. It is your responsibility to respond to the Referee Liaison, in an appropriate time frame and requested by the Referee Liaison, of your availability. Once you are assigned a game schedule, it is your responsibility to show up for your games, on time and wearing your official uniform, and remain at the field for all your assigned games.
I play, how do I get assigned games?
It is your responsibility to advise the Referee Liaison when your games are so as not to be scheduled to referee when you are playing. The Referee Liaison will work your referee schedule around your game schedule.
How many games can I referee in a day?
Normally no more than three games in a day, especially if you are under 16 years of age. If you play, and you referee, this means you can be out on the field up to 5-6 hours in a day. This is a long time to be under the sun or pouring rain, running around, hearing cheering, yelling, the thump of a kicked ball, dealing with players, coaches, and spectators. This is, and can, be a stressful job. Expectations by players, coaches, and spectators are such that they expect the best from you from the first game you referee to the last game you referee. They really don’t care if you are on your third game, because if you act tired, and are not doing a good job, they may assume you are refereeing for the money and not the qualified referee you truly are to officiate their games.
Do referees get paid?
Yes. Based on your Referee Position, referees are paid by the minute of the game. For example, if you are a Center Referee and worked a game with two 30 minute halves, you will be paid $30.00 for that game and the Assistant Referee is paid $15.00, half of the Centers’ pay. Pay checks are typically sent out weekly, this may change based on the Club Treasurer’s deadlines.
